Echoes of Somme Mud

I had to be alone,
but as soldiers clamber over hill
and rugged blasted terrain
huddled whenever possible
to feel their living flesh –

For all, but the very few to remain
were lost
lying deep,
entrenched
upon a blood-drenched and squalid soil

My heart a mess, my mind ever vigil,
but terribly confused
I knew my time was all but up
and yet with these I had a one last goodbye
before an impending dawn of more,
much more of the same.

What horrid, horrible landscape I see,
no grass of green no more.

And whence one is able – the mud,
the stench lay here above our throat
to inhale the messiness and confusion of war.

No-one knows whoever will be next,
but pray it be another.
And yet in that horrible, fearful way
think more about the ones at home
than here among each other.

God give us back our life
as before
the thrill, the pang has gone
the future now is what I seek
without this squalor of war.

The Power of Beauty

The roses bloom in shades so pale
the beauty lasts forever, divinely so
for others to pass over time
and not lose out
for that beauty not to be seen
is a loss, a crying shame.

Give me that beauty from within,
give me that power
for those to whom I do pass
and greet and know
so that hateful words I do not say
to them with whom this Earth I travel,
venture and pass by.

Give me the staying power
of those beauteous shades
to allow other people
to whom I am to know and love,
to value that part of me
I do so want to expose, encourage and care
to enable it to no longer come and go,
but last
as this building in time does show.

A Mother’s Lament

.

.

Standing tall amongst the stone
as if enthroned
a mother laments,
but what…
we are to leave for her
to there bemoan.

Who We Are

Dark and ugly,
quite surreal
is this portrayal
of who we are
and not yet seen
portrayed here by Gaudi
what we are unable to know and view
of what in history we repeat
and now can somehow religiously view.

Home – if Only

Take me home
let me be free
the birds are singing
and I know their call
that sweet and heavenly sound.

The birds are indicating
the world is no longer at war
but not that things are all calmly in place

For I am now
so very far from home
and long to be at peace
among that wondrous calm
and sound of nature’s throng.
